I think your second layout was stronger, this one lacks contrast. I also think that the 3d gear hanging off the left in v2 adds visual interest and probably should be kept as a layout element. For me, at least, the 3d gear catches the eye and the blue background and logotype draw the eye to the download button. If you chose a different grid and started over, I suspect you wouldn't have a problem dropping that box.
