>From what I've noticed, Subversion appears to update the project at hand first in its entirety and then updates the externals. Since the externals are generally pointing to *specific versions* of the project, I've tended to just hit ctrl-c most of the time. I just updated the external for Kid the other day (to follow the trunk), and that change worked just fine...
