The reason to use Pound over Squid is that Pound uses around 5M of RAM while it is recommended to run Squid on a dedicated server, preferably with fast hardware RAID and as much RAM as you can afford, maybe more. Pound is far more appropriate if you only need a proxy. That being said, if you are deploying Plone, you will probably want to use Squid. Zope really requires a cache and has Squid integration.
