I have 6GB on my plan, and even that is very generous. I rarely need to store large files as this is mainly a webserver. Personally I would suggest using Debian which is a meer 95MB to begin with. I prefer it as you have complete control over what is installed and what isn't. The added bonus of Linode is that they have real swap space. I've used VPS's before where you don't get swap... if your server uses all available memory then you're screwed.
