For everyone's information, Sean and I narrowed it down to an installation problem. Somewhere along the way, something got corrupted. I removed everything, including python, and started over from the beginning. Everything is working ok again, with the exception of some unrelated problems that I had been experiencing with dreamhost before - sometimes it's moody about loading the fastcgi script.
