Perhaps do the first few examples without it, then explain it (perhaps by saying, "wait! we just found out that our application needs to work for people who speak different languages" or something like that), and use it always from that point on?
That way the reader gets to kick some ass right away, but early on you get them used to seeing the extra _("code").
