I had a similar need and I simply created another class that referenced the relationship table seperately - I also had some extra fields in there too. As long as you make sure that your RelatedJoin declaration has the joinColumn and otherColumn parameters set correctly the join table can have as much extra data as you want. I then created _get_ and _set_ methods within each class that had the RelatedJoin so I could access the reference table without having to mess around with .select() all the time. Hope this helps.
