Using httprepl, I confirmed that it is indeed SQLAlchemy (0.2.3 now) locking up. The server is fine for hours, then when the problem occurs, each thread that encounters a database access call locks at the point of connecting to the database. The threads stay locked indefinately and the server stops responding when all threads are locked.
