That old patch has been superseded by other work Kevin's done. The only thing that doesn't work out-of-the-box right now for me is ensuring that all threads have engines (as since ActiveMapper uses DynamicMetaData, engine connections are thread-local). I've posted a patch which resolves this at http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.web.turbogears.trunk/1752, and am anxiously awaiting feedback from Kevin.
