I believe that you should be able to use TurboGears 0.9a9 and the latest released version of SQLAlchemy (0.2.8). However, there are a host of features in TurboGears that are not yet supported if you choose SQLAlchemy at this stage. Mostly, CatWalk and the Model Designer will not work with SQLAlchemy yet.
