I don't mean to be rude, but there are better places for this discussion. I understand that everybody has their own opinions and experience, but lets try to stay on topic. MySQL is obviously applicable for a variety of problem domains, otherwise it would no longer be popular. Its specific uses for an individual project can only be usefully evaluated by the person(s) conducting that project. If you have useful information please provide it, but lets stay out of flame wars over components which are at best tangentially related to TG.
