You have to create it before you use it and call next():

<?python OddEven = tg.cycle(('odd','even')) ?>
<tr py:for="item in item_list" class="OddEven.next()">
  <td>${item.name}</td>
  <td>${OddEven}</td>
</tr>

The ${OddEven} in the td will print 'odd' or 'even' without advancing
the iterator.
