Thanks very much mark. I came up with a similar solution that does not involve a secondary join. I do appreciate the feedback. I have figured out that sqlalchemy and active mapper defines can play together which is a good thing. I'm not really a fan of AM any more. Maybe something better will arrive in the near future...
