That's not cheating, that's just a good idea! But we used to have a document on Trac which explained how to add Identity to an existing project. My guess is that it was an early version of the Itentity Tutorial, so you may be able to find some hints there too. I THINK all the settings in the config files are always generated by quickstart, but I know there was some refactoring when we added the SQLAlchemy identity templates, so it's possible that things have changed since I last looked.
