That looks like exactly the solution i needed.  I had resorted to
wrapping the code in a try statement and catching the error it
produced, but your method is much cleaner and more flexible.

What i was actually trying to accomplish was to describe a period of
time - it could be defined by it's start date, end date, and duration,
but only two of the three at any given time.  I don't mind it being
under-defined.
