I was just thinking the same thing: subscribe a single-purpose email account to the list, and either a quick procmail filter or a script to go over the mailbox in batch would be a more stable solution. I checked the Google Groups docs; not only do they not offer an API to access the group archives, but they prohibit spidering the archives in their TOS.
