anything is missing in my environment, thanks for the help.
I had the same problem on Debian Sarge. The problem went away after
installing these two packages (not sure which one):
http://packages.debian.org/stable/utils/zlib-bin
http://packages.debian.org/stable/libdevel/zlib1g-dev
