Are you able to view YouTube videos? I heard recently that YouTube switched
to requiring Flash 9 because of some security issue with Flash 8. Overall,

I was able to view YouTube videos perfectly with the version of Flash I had 1h
ago :-)
from what I hear Flash 9 adoption is moving pretty fast, but I haven't seen
independent stats to know how fast. I will grant that not everyone has Flash
9 installed now, though.

There should be some fallback... :-( Removing some effects but making the
application accessible.
I'm not sure that this displayshelf would've been possible in older Flash
versions. Adobe added optional static typing to ActiveScript and made the
flash vm code run very fast. (the display shelf adds a reflection for images
that are served locally).

The bookmarking and accessibility problems are long gone in Flash.
Usability

How can I bookmark the viewing of the second photo -- and later the fifth
photo, both counting from the left -- on that application, then? I'd like to
say "Hey, mom, take a look at these two pictures!" without having to tell her
"go here, count the second and the fifth from the left and take a look at
them". :-)
is a problem with apps in every technology :)

Indeed it is. But if we can minimize this problem then lets do it. (Just as a
reference on what looks like the future:
