Well I was just going to put it into a gentoo startup script. So what is the point of installing start-project or start-project.py in a /usr/bin if you have to run it in a directory containing prod.cfg ?

That file should be in your current directory. You can also pass the full path to the current directory as a command line argument. Please note that TG actually does this by default, just in a slightly different way.
