I still don't see how having it enabled is the most common scenario. You've not pointed to any case where this is enabled in something else by default, where it's the most common way. You say that you have it enabled, great. I've setup gzip compression on sites as well, but where's the whole "everyone else does it" at? If you are going to enable it, it makes sense that it would be set in production and not in dev.
