I've used BLOBs in firebird with kinterbasdb without any problem. There is chapter in docs: http://kinterbasdb.sourceforge.net/dist_docs/usage.html#adv_param_conv_blobs So I think it is SQLObject's problem. BTW, is there any particular reason why do you use 0.7.2?
