Hi, to access the model you don't necessarily need TurboGears. You could simply import your model, set up the SQLObject connection and you should be fine. XMLRPC access to tg-controlles should be possible. Search for @expose and xml-rpc. Never tried it out.
I'm owning the TurboGears book. My first impression was negative as it is full of errors and typos. But it offers so much valuable information that I started to really love it. I learned a lot from it. If you really want to start hacking TurboGears stuff it is a must read!
