My guess is that you error has something to do with your database module or settings. I had errors about unicode (I can't remember exactly) when writing to an Oracle database with SQLAlchemy. I wasn't using Catwalk or SQLObject. I did a hackish fix by just using str() everywhere to convert back from unicode before writing to the database.
