I find them really useful: I can ignore a whole discussion by ignoring
the thread...  So, if someone hijacks the thread, his chances of having
an answer from me are zero if I ignored that thread :-)  (they are near
zero when I'm too busy but this is a detail ;-)). 

It is unfortunate that people do that often, though, because it also
messes with references on list archives...
