To answer my own question (in case anyone else cares) it seems that
the validators apply either to the value being returned in the case of
non iterables or the contents of the iterable being returned - so for
instance the Int() validator will create an integer if the form value
is '10', or it will create a list of integers if the form returns
multiple values for the same name.
