Even assuming you are using widgets; the use of 'readonly' involves it being passed straight through to the HTML.
My understanding is that 'disabled' fields are not sent as part of the form data; but that 'readonly' field are sent as part of the form. This (and their visual appearance) are what separates them from each other.
