Yup, my experience too. I could not see any advantage to going any further with paypal, the docs are really scattered, inconsistent, and out of date in many places and it looked like a giant headache. Simple IPN seemes to work fine and is pretty similar to other payment gateways "hosted paypage" solutions. I figure if someone is using paypal, they aren't likely to be turned off by going to a paypal site to complete the transaction. It's not like we're trying to use paypal to look like Amazon!
