Well, there is no nudge. It can't do what you want it to do. If you 
don't want to write this yourself, you might feel more comfortable with 
attaching a bit of JS to the selectfield, submit the value to a 
controller and store it in the session. Then in the 
autocomplete-controller, use that value as additional filter criteria.

Beyond that - well, there will always be situations where the boundaries 
of TG (or any other webframework for that matter) are to limiting, and 
you certainly should invest the time needed to learn how to build more 
powerful controls yourself.
