Look at the product called "registration" (it's on cheeseshop). That one builds on top of the identity. Might get you hints on how to deal with this. I doubt you can really "replace" identity that easily (other's may be more qualified to answer that), but I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to subclass and make it simpler - since registration makes it more complex by doing that.
