I played around with importing my widgets in my template, but then I discovered that the relevant CSS and javascript will not get pulled in.
It seems like the _process_output method is what is responsible for pulling in all that stuff, and by importing the widget in the template, I short-circuit that system. I'm posting this in the hopes that somebody else may find it useful.
