When I had issues like yours they got fixed by

1. Double checking all the paths.
2. Check the proper permission on your app, virtual env, python egg folders
3. Since you cannot import past, that means you are pointing to the
wrong python setup.
4. have you try "source" your new virtualenv and see if you app will
work if you run it manually paster serve.... ? (don't forge to change
the permission back to apache user after you are done)

Doing the above has never failed me.
