I just solved my own problem after about 3 days of trying.  My fear of
vi and emacs probably made me avoid the solution which is here
http://docs.webfaction.com/software/python.html.  now all that is left
is to link wsgi with the 2.6 virtual environment, and install an egg
or whatever.
