A lot of work has been done starting from TG2.1.1 to unbind TG from pylons, our target is to get to a point where we can switch from Pylons to anything else without breaking any existing TG applications that used only things from the TG namespace (tg.request instead of pylons.request for example).
When we will be at that point we will think about alternatives to Pylons and start moving to them. Pyramid is probably the first candidate between the available ones.
