i'm going to answer theoretically: that is probably because of the widget re-drawing the table / list element right after sorting therefore you can write a callback function attached to sort function that will run before sorting and save ids, -or anything unique about selected items- to an array. you'll need another callback function to call after sorting and apply selection to the items with the ids in the array you've created.
