I guess you have a different gearbox program in your PATH. You can find
it with "which gearbox". The TG gearbox works on the console only.

I just installed tg.devtools in a virtualenv on arch linux with python
and any gearbox command opens a little window with infinitely spinning
gears. Clearing the DISPLAY variable makes some commands work but other
apparently require the GUI, no idea why.
