JavaWebStart is the recommended approach for launching the Java viewer in a zero-install capacity. Using the Java viewer as an applet is already somewhat non-ideal, because you can't take advantage of accelerated JPEG decompression in that case. In other words, you aren't really using "Turbo"VNC unless you launch the Java viewer with JWS (or run it as a standalone app.) As far as transmitting over HTTPS, it's not as simple as just using a different client. You'd need a proxy on the server end as well, something that could intercept the HTTPS connections and farm them out to the appropriate VNC server instances. We support the UltraVNC Repeater, which will allow you to use a single port on the server for all VNC connections, but it doesn't use HTTPS. It is still using the RFB protocol. HTML5 is just never going to have the performance we need.
