Actually, Maven supports TestNG natively in the Surefire plugin. I've tried it before and it does work.
Maven does NOT support JUnit 4.0 yet. Thus, if you want to go with something other than junit 3.8.1, TestNG is the only option right now. The problem with TestNG is that the "integrated support in eclipse" stuff is no where near as good as the JUnit support. Debugging JUnit tests in eclipse is very pleasant.
