I have another usage scenario to show why this needs to be accessible to application developers (with the same caveat that it should be partitioned into an aspect or similar construct), as opposed to just framework developers is audit trail.
It is common in financial services to log connection level artifacts in the application level audit trail, such as IP address of the client or the digital certificate that was presented during authentication. If application developers have no way to "pierce the veil" to get such artifacts, they are forced to either abandon the framework or fork it.
