I've been offline for awhile and in getting synced back up am trying
to do things the Right Way and surface my questions on the discussion
list -- it pains me to see my attempts at publically figuring out
what's happened as being branded as derisive and whining.

I appreciate you bringing this up and looking for solutions. I didn't appreciate the comments about signing up for crap.

Re-reading that message I agree that we have a failure to communicate and that how I read it the first time is probably quite different from what you intended. For the pains it caused you, I apologize.
