I know what you mean. I had exactly this problem when I first started
working with SDO. I did end up installing a version of zlib that didn't work
even though it was more recent. I'm not sure that we should pin this issue
on this particular release but you are right that we need a better way to
handle external dependencies. Ideally we would just say "the latest release
of X available from web site Y" but that commits us to regular upgrades and
associated testing. As you say, bundln the stuff might be a good compromise.
