It was a mismatch in the expat library that Python includes and the one that Ruby or httpd use. To fix this we use LD_PRELOAD=<our python extension> before invoking Ruby (or starting httpd). This pulls in the expat that Python insists on and the other components are happy using that version. Cheers, -- Pete
