I'm happy to ditch them and there is a very tiny change to the ant build
if
they are not there.
I really like having the pre-built samples in the binary distro and the
simplicity they provide by being able to run them out-of-the-box with a
simple java -cp command. What is the problem with keeping them?

+1 from me for keeping the pre-built samples in the binary distro.
If I wanted to try out and get a rough idea of what Tuscany and SCA are
about, I would probably do the following:
1. Download and unzip our binary distro
2. Run one or two of the pre-built samples to see if they work
3. Take a look at the sample code
4. Maybe take a look at the Javadoc
So, I think it's useful to have the pre-built samples and be able to run
them without having to install and set up Ant to build them first.
