here is an example from "Core Python:"
WITHOUT conditional expressions:
>>> x = 4
>>> y = 3
>>> if x < y:
... smaller = x
... else:
... smaller = y
...
>>> smaller
3
WITH conditional expressions:
>>> smaller = x if x < y else y
>>> smaller
3
