Sara -- I'd also recommend that you find and install a Windows version of whatever editor (whether vi, vim or something else like emacs) you're going to be using on the Unix box. Play with it locally on your own machine for a while and get comfortable with it, and then start using the copy on the unix system. That will let you take baby steps, and gain a little confidence.
