I didn't notice any call to root.mainloop() in your original code.
Are you calling mainloop() anywhere?
I noticed that too but it doesn't seem to need a mainloop call, I
assume that is happening somewhere in the inherited Dialog
framework, but I've no idea how/where!
But an event loop is surely running somewhere!
