You may want to try the excel format. Two possible outcomes may be that these are actually csv files under the covers that depend on excel's ability to recognize csv formats in files terminating with '.xls' -- another possibility is that the excel format is legitimate, and you can then parse the results more reliably with John Machin's xlrd package.
