I too learnt perl first and I came to learn python through the google python class
http://code.google.com/edu/languages/google-python-class/ It has video lectures and exercises which should help you illustrate the basic concepts in each video. I am by no means an python expert, but I feel that series gave me enough of an introduction to python to be able to go off and learn anything else I needed to know about the language from online tutorials.
