Based on what everyone has said and the fact that my learning material is for 3, I think I will be okay learning 3 and will stumble into the gotchas as I develop with 2.7. Luckily my experience as a programmer should keep me warm at night :) Mark PS. I shall resist the temptation to force python to use curly braces and will learn to embrace indentation.
