Well, what does it do? The most useless problem report is "it isn't working". That tells us nothing. Does it raise an exception? Crash? Set the laptop on fire? Does he use Gmail via their website, Outlook, something else? Does his ISP block outgoing email on port 25? Many ISPs do, to try to prevent viruses from sending out spam. Does your friend actually have a mail server running?
