Several have already been mentioned. vim and emacs are the standards. Geany is popular on Linux but also available on Windows/MacOSX Jedit hasn't had a shout yet but does work cross platform. Fairly lightweight. Eclipse and Netbeans are the heavyweight options - very powerful but need big machines to run them - the more RAM the better. Both have Python plugins.
